Opening up the horizon's as I try my hand at dealer's choice
Well the evening started off with trying the local the £30+ 1 at Southport and as per usual entries where crap. Eight people turned up in total and two of those was me and Cash Biatch ( girlfriend Caroline).
After having no luck in the tournament, if you can call it that, considering it was smaller than the normal sit n goes I would play, headed off to a private game of dealer's choice.
Now i must confess at this stage that the selection of games here apart from Texas I had never played live before. The game selection for the night was mainly, seven card stud, super stud, Omaha, Omaha hi/lo with variations, Irish, low ball and a couple of others but that was the main frame of the game.
As I said before these are not games I have played to any extent before and after plenty of reading and a lot of time online, spent trying to get the hang of such games i decided to take a stab at the game with a very cautious approach.
The game was made up of experienced players that are well known for their solid approach to this game but I was hoping that my knowledge of stats and outs would surely come in to there own. The other thing I was depending on was the ability to put down a hand regardless of its strength when knowing it wasn't going to pay.
The game started very well. Everyone knew i was a beginner and not some kid at his work trying to sharp their weekly game so I pulled up £50 and took it from there. I put aside £300 for this game so that there was no pressure on my game when I felt I could mix it up with them.
The first £50 didn't last long but that was only due to a bad outdraw in hi lo but having all my money in when streets ahead I really didn't feel I played it wrong.
I re loaded for a second time and and settled in real well and took a hold on the game for a couple of hours.
The key to my success was laying a very big hand in hi lo when I was sure my opponent was betting the low when I had the nuts low with an over and I laid the hand down and explained why.
The table initially thought i was crazy because I was going to get at least half the pot back if i called. I explained that at the time on the river, player (lets call him x) x bet the pot which was £90. That put £180 in the middle and £90 for me to call. Know if my low stands up and he had a better high it means I'm putting in £90 to win £45. It doesn't make sense the guy had played solid so it just didn't warrant a call in my game and so i folded.
This I think turned out to be the best move of the night. After that people really started to understand that although i hadn't played the game before i had a very good understanding of when to get my money in.
The rest went from there i had a couple of nice pots to get me up to around the £400 mark and with a couple bad beats to follow i finished the night very happy indeed with my game and a healthy profit of £220 so i was more than happy with the night.
I can definitely say this is a game i will be playing a lot more of in the future and something i feel i might very well have an edge in once the dust settles........ keep you posted..... skipper
